Faf du Plessis’ stint in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2021 will remain a short one, all thanks to a nasty injury which he sustained during the Quetta Gladiators and Peshawar Zalmi’s match on June 12. While trying to save a boundary, the former South African captain collided with fellow teammate Mohammad Hasnain and subsequently sustained a concussion. He got ruled out of the game and was taken to hospital for scans.
The 36-year-old took to Twitter a day later and revealed that he had suffered some memory loss due to the concussion. However, he also mentioned being hopeful to make a comeback soon. Contrary to his plans, the latest developments suggest that the Proteas star will not participate any further in PSL 2021 and will fly back to South Africa on June 15 (Wednesday).
Faf du Plessis to return home
“Faf du Plessis will take no further part in the PSL after his collision with Mohammad Hasnain whilst fielding. He will be flying back to South Africa tonight #PSL6,” tweeted prominent Pakistan-based sports journalist Saj Sadiq. It is indeed a major blow for Quetta Gladiators as Du Plessis was in red-hot form lately.

For the unversed, before PSL 2021, du Plessis was plying his trade in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021, which got postponed midway on May 4. At the time of the season suspension, the South African dasher, who plays for Chennai Super Kings, was the competition’s third-leading run-scorer with 320 runs in seven outings.
Quetta Gladiators would have wanted du Plessis to continue his stellar run after the resumption of PSL 2021 in UAE. However, the star player got concussed after playing just one game and will not participate in the remainder of the season. Notably, opener Saim Ayub was named his concussion substitute during the clash against Peshawar Zalmi. However, the youngster was dropped in the next game.
Meanwhile, Quetta Gladiators haven’t enjoyed a great campaign in PSL 2021. With just two wins in eight games, they are reeling at the last place in the team standings. Although they are all but out of the playoff race, the Sarfaraz Ahmed-led side must win their remaining two fixtures to give themselves an outside chance.
