Prior to the 2017-18 edition of the Ranji Trophy, Vidarbha was just another team in the Indian domestic circuit. However, fortunes started taking a turn for them as in that particular season, the team, captained by Faiz Fazal, won their maiden championship. Vidarbha won the Final against Delhi by nine wickets courtesy of an all-round show from their cricketers.
The skipper was their highest run-scorer that season with 912 runs at an average of 70.15 with five centuries and one fifty. Fast bowler Rajneesh Gurbani shone with the leather picking 39 wickets from six matches. In the Irani Cup, Fazal’s team beat the Rest of India (ROI). This time around, Vidarbha got the better of Saurashtra by 78 runs in the Final.
The evergreen batsman Wasim Jaffer, playing his second season for Vidarbha, was their leading run-scorer with 1037 runs at an average of 69.13 with four tons and a couple of fifties. Even the skipper wasn’t bad as he got 752 runs at an average of 50.13 with three tons and a couple of half-centuries. In the bowling department, left-arm spinner Aditya Sarwate picked up 55 wickets. Once again, Vidarbha won the Irani Cup.
Faiz Fazal questions Indian selectors
In the meantime, Fazal, their skipper, is highly disappointed as players from Vidarbha haven’t got into the Indian national team despite some strong shows. Fazal himself made his ODI debut in Zimbabwe back in 2016 and hasn’t donned the national colours ever since. Back in the 2000s, even Jaffer played quite a few international games for India, but he gradually faded into oblivion.
Only Umesh Yadav has been the most recognized player from Vidarbha over the last few years. Fazal definitely doesn’t seem to be too happy with the Indian selectors. Yadav hasn’t been picked in the World Cup squad, that was announced last month. The 33-year-old took a sly dig at the selectors, reminding them of Vidarbha’s performances. He wrote, “Did we win Ranji Trophy and Irani Cup back to back?”
Here is Fazal’s tweet:
