Fans clash on social media after a frosty handshake between Virat Kohli and Tim Paine
There was a lot going on between the two captains during the Perth Test.
Amidst all the hype around the Indian Premier League (IPL) auction, Australia thrashed India by 146 runs just before the event. All was certainly not well between the captains of the two teams Virat Kohli and Tim Paine. Both were engaged in a verbal duel during the third and fourth day’s play which spurred up the crowd and former cricketers as well.
They almost collided as well when Paine was stealing a single and Kohli ran into him eventually just to evade a clash. While a lot was said in the media about the banter, with one of the newspapers headlining ‘Kohli War’, Paine eventually had the final say with his team winning the Perth Test and not surprisingly was delighted. This was his first win as the Australian captain.
Kohli gives a nothing reaction
After the last wicket fell, the Australians celebrated their first Test victory since Newlands saga in March and then came the visitors for the customary handshakes. All the eyes were on Tim Paine and Virat Kohli who finally came in front of each other for the handshake. While Paine was happy and he patted on his counterpart’s back as well, Kohli just shook hands and left without saying anything to him.
The video of the same also went viral soon while the fans from both the countries had a go each other on social media over the same. It was claimed by the Aussie media that Kohli said, “I am the best player in the world. You are just the stand-in captain,” to Paine which has left many fuming. But the BCCI clarified the matter stating that nothing such statement was passed by the Indian skipper and everything is being ‘assumed.’
These incidents normally inspire Virat Kohli to play well in the following matches and it will be interesting to see how he responds to all the criticism with the bat.
