Fans want Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan to make it to the Indian team after Rishabh Pant’s constant failures
Pant could manage only 23 runs in the South Africa T20I series.
Rishabh Pant is being seen as a successor of MS Dhoni, who is at the fag end of his career, in the Indian national cricket team. The southpaw made his debut back in February 2017, but started featuring regularly for the Men in Blue after he made his Test debut against England at the Trent Bridge in Nottingham. Ever since, his career has been plagued by inconsistencies.
After a couple of months, the left-hander forayed into ODI cricket and recently, he was also a part of the Indian squad for the 2019 World Cup in England and Wales. Albeit he wasn’t a first-choice player, he was called up as a replacement of Shikhar Dhawan, who was ruled out owing to a thumb injury. Thereafter, the 21-year-old played the ODI and T20I series in the West Indies.
Rishabh Pant succumbs to one failure after the other
But apart from his fifty in the third T20I at the Providence Stadium in Guyana, he couldn’t step up and deliver. The Uttarakhand-born recently was a part of the three-match T20I series versus South Africa and he flattered to deceive yet again. At the PCA Stadium in Mohali, Pant could manage only four runs and then got 19 runs at the Chinnaswamy before playing a rash shot of Bjorn Fortuin.
He is next set to play the three-match Test series against the Proteas, starting October 2 in Visakhapatnam. Meanwhile, the fans aren’t happy with Pant by any stretch of the imagination. In limited-overs cricket, donning the India jersey, Pant averages in the low 20s, numbers which are meek compared to his overall record. The fans want Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan in the mix.
Samson’s name has been in the selectors’ radar for quite some time. He has played a solitary T20I in Zimbabwe in 2015, but hasn’t been able to stake his clam back into the Indian side. Samson lately scored a sparkling 91 against South Africa A in Visakhapatnam and also got a century in the IPL.
The likes of Gautam Gambhir have backed Samson, so much so that he wanted the youngster to play the World Cup. As far as Kishan is concerned, he is a fearless batsman and has come up the ranks from the U19 circuit. The left-hander had a decent outing off late versus South Africa A.
