In a surprising turn of events, Angelo Mathews faced a "timed out" dismissal in the 25th over. Sri Lanka's Charith Asalanka played a fine innings, scoring 108 runs, and that helped Sri Lanka reach a total of 279 runs. Tanzim Hasan Shakib was outstanding on his World Cup debut and claimed three wickets.
Bangladesh lost two early wickets, but Shakib Al Hasan and Najmul Hossain Shanto formed a crucial partnership of 169 runs. Although Angelo Mathews managed to dismiss both of them, it came too late for Sri Lanka. They comfortably achieved the goal of 280 runs with three wickets to spare in 41.1 overs.
