Thursday night is set to be special for cricket fans around the world. For the first time this season, Mumbai Indians (MI) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) will cross paths in IPL 2024. The two teams have played some woeful cricket so far but will be hoping to fight it out at the Wankhede Stadium.

Mumbai Indians (MI) began the season with three successive losses before winning against Delhi Capitals. If it wasn’t for the last over heroics of Romario Shepherd, the MI team were in huge trouble. The bowling especially the spin department still remains a concern with Piyush Chawla’s performance going from bad to worse.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) have played five games this season and lost four of them. Virat Kohli has been the shining light with the bat but just like Mumbai, even RCB bowlers have been struggling for form. One more loss in this season of the IPL could spell trouble for Faf Dun Plessis and his team.

Pitch Report

The last game at this venue saw over 400 runs being scored during the day game. The previous night game between MI and RR was a game dominated by the bowlers. The skipper who wins the toss will want to bowl first as chasing is easier on this track. With the small boundaries and an electric outfield, expect yet another high scoring game.

Player Picks

9
C

Rohit Sharma MI | BAT

The former Mumbai Indians skipper was at this aggressive best against Delhi Capitals. It was his 49 runs with the bat that helped Mumbai Indians get an early advantage. If Rohit Sharma can keep the same form going then the MI faithfuls will be in for a huge day.

C

Virat Kohli RCB | BAT

Royal Challengers Bengaluru fans have been delighted with the form shown by Virat Kohli. The 35-year-old is in good form having just scored a century in the game against Rajasthan Royals. Virat Kohli loves batting at the Wankhede Stadium and he would like to continue his love affair with ground and look to score big yet again.

9
C

Jasprit Bumrah MI | BOWL

Jasprit Bumrah has been the best pacer for Mumbai Indians this year. The 30-year-old sent Prithvi Shaw’s leg-stump packing just when the young batter was starting to look dangerous. It was against RCB that Jasprit Bumrah made his debut as a 19-year-old now over a decade later he could be the bowler who could send RCB packing out of IPL 2024.

7

Tim David MI | BAT

Former RCB star, Tim David has become a very key member of the Mumbai Indians side in a short period of time. On Sunday the 28-year-old batter smashed an unbeaten 45 against Delhi Capitals to give Mumbai Indians the much needed push towards the end of the innings

9

Glenn Maxwell RCB | ALL

The Australian all-rounded played his best ever ODI knock at the same venue. While Glenn Maxwell has been struggling for runs, his experience of playing at this venue will hold him in good stead. It will also be a great chance for the 35-year-old to bounce back into form against one of his former sides.

7

Tilak Varma MI | BAT

Barring the failure in the game against Delhi Capitals, it is Tilak Varma who has been Mumbai Indians star batter. The youngster played a superb knock at the Chinnaswamy Stadium last year when MI and RCB opened their IPL 2023 campaign. With the quality Varma possesses, he could very well be the difference maker on Thursday.

8.5

Ishan Kishan MI | WK

25-year-old Ishan Kishan came into IPL 2024 needing to prove a point to the selectors and to the fans. So far the left-handed batter and wicketkeeper hasn’t been that successful. His 42 against Delhi Capitals might be the start that he was looking for and hopefully on a run-scoring spree.

7.5

Dinesh Karthik RCB | WK

RCB’s veteran wicketkeeper and batter began the season with some explosive performances. The 38-year-old though hasn’t seen much time with the bat in the last few games. Dinesh Karthik could most probably be playing in Mumbai for the last time and he will want to give the fans something to remember.

8

Romario Shepherd MI | ALL

In just one game, the big hitting talents of Romario Shepherd has changed how the opposition teams view Mumbai Indians. Historically, RCB have struggled in final four overs of the innings. This is where Shepherd comes into his own could be a dangerous player to handle for the under-pressure RCB bowlers.

9.5

Piyush Chawla

MI | ALL

Mumbai Indians spinner Piyush Chawla has seen his confidence and form take a huge nosedive. From capturing over 20 wickets last season to becoming the most expensive bowlers in the last few games, Chawla has seen it all. One more bad performance and we could very well see the curtains drawn for Piyush Chawla this season.

6.5

Karn Sharma

RCB | BOWL

Yet another veteran leg-spinner who has done well in the IPL. Karn Sharma could be preferred in place of Himanshu Sharma to give RCB the much needed potency in the middle-overs. The 36-year-ild though hasn’t played much this season and throwing him into the Wankhede cauldron could be a huge mistake from the RCB team management.
