Mumbai Indians Women (MUM-W) will take on Delhi Capitals Women (DEL-W) in the first match of the WPL 2024 on Friday (February 23) at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. It will be a repeat of last season’s final, where the Mumbai Indians defeated the Capitals by seven wickets. They chased down the target of 132 runs in 19.3 overs.
The Capitals finished in first place last season with six wins in eight matches. MI had also won six out of eight matches and finished in second position. Both teams faced each other thrice last season and MI won on two occasions.
Meg Lanning will lead the Capitals again this season. They retained a total of 15 players before going into the mini-auction and released a total of three players, including the USA pacer Tara Norris. They had INR 2.5 crore with them to spend and they went all in for Annabel Sutherland. The Capitals spent INR 2 crore to get Sutherland at the auction table. They bought Aparna Mondal and Ashwani Kumari for their base price of INR 10 lakh to complete the auction proceedings.
MI had a silent auction as well as they had a purse value of just INR 2.1 crore. They fought a hard battle for Sutherland with the Capitals but failed to add her to their roster. MI, however, got the experience of pacer Shabnim Ismail for INR 1.2 crore. They bought S Sajana for ₹15 lakh, Amandeep Kaur, Fatima Jaffer, and Keerthana Balakrishnan for ₹10 lakh each.
