New Zealand (NZ) will clash against Pakistan (PAK) in the first match of a five-game T20I series at Eden Park in Auckland on Friday, January 12. Both these sides last played against each other in a five-match T20I series in Pakistan in April 2023. The series was drawn 2-2 with one game in no result.
Shaheen Shah Afridi will lead the Pakistan outfit for the first time in T20Is, while leggie Usama Mir, pacer Abbas Afridi, and keeper-batter Haseebullah Khan claimed their maiden call-ups to the T20I side. The selection committee, led by Wahab Riaz, has gone with six-pace bowling options considering the conditions in New Zealand.
Naseem Shah, Shadab Khan, and Ihsanullah have been ruled out of this tour due to their respective injuries. Mohammad Harris, Shan Masood, and Faheem Ashraf, who were part of Pakistan's last bilateral series, have been axed from the New Zealand T20I series.
For New Zealand, Matt Henry, who missed out on the World Cup 2023 due to his injury, will make a grand return to the T20I series. Captain Kane Williamson and Devon Conway, who were rested for the Bangladesh series, will be a part of the series. However, Williamson will miss the third T20I to manage his knee issue, which has been bothering him for a long time.
Pacer Ben Sears has been included for the first two matches, while Kyle Jamieson and Michael Bracewell have been ruled out due to injuries. Notably, Trent Boult and James Neesham weren't available for selection. Both these sides have met against each other on 34 occasions in T20Is, with Pakistan winning 20 of them, while New Zealand bagged 13 wins. One encounter ended without a result.

Player Picks
Kane Williamson NZ | BAT
Making his comeback after a much-deserved rest, Kane Williamson is a veteran T20 cricketer with 6304 runs in 236 T20 innings. He's expected to play an anchor role in this dashing batting line-up. He has 45 fifty-plus scores in this particular format, which speaks about his dominance in the top order.
Devon Conway NZ | BAT
After the emergence of T20 leagues across the globe, Devon Conway became a household name. He has 5552 runs from just 163 T20 innings at an impressive average of 42.7, featuring 46 fifty-plus totals. Without an iota of doubt, he's one of the opening batters to watch out for as a multiplier.
Daryl Mitchell NZ | ALL
All-rounder Daryl Mitchell has 4093 runs to his batting tally in this format, while he picked 76 wickets with the ball in hand. Of late, he turned out to be one of the most consistent batters in the top and middle-order for Blackcaps in the white-ball format.
Babar Azam PAK | BAT
Known for his consistency and high-scoring abilities, Babar Azam is one of the most consistent top-order batters going around in this format. He has accumulated 9462 runs from 258 T20 innings at an average of 43.6 with 87 fifty-plus totals.
Mohammad Rizwan PAK | WK
After a brief lull start to his career, Mohammed Rizwan emerged as Pakistan's best wicketkeeper-batter choice in the middle-order. He has 6945 runs from 208 T20 innings at an average of 43.95 with 61 fifty-plus totals, which signifies his importance as a top pick.
Aamer Jamal PAK | ALL
Aamer Jamal is coming into this series on the back of a decent all-round performance in Australia. He would be replacing Nawaz in the XI and we can expect him to come out all guns blazing.
Iftikhar Ahmed PAK | ALL
Iftikhar Ahmed is anticipated to smack a cameo in the lower middle-order and death overs. He can give some valuable and quick fantasy points with both bat and ball.
Matt Henry NZ | BOWL
Matt Henry is making his comeback after missing out on the World Cup due to an injury. Known for hitting hard and tight lengths, Henry has scalped 146 wickets from 121 T20 innings. He's expected to play a crucial role in the initial and middle overs.
Glenn Phillips NZ | WK
Glenn Phillips turned out to be an aggressive middle-order batter in the shortest format of the game. He has amassed 5813 runs from 210 T20 innings and scalped 18 wickets with his part-time off-spin.
