Sunrisers Eastern Cape (SUNE) will take on Joburg Super Kings (JSK) in the first match of the SA20 2024 on Wednesday (January 10) at the St George's Park in Gqeberha. Both the teams faced each other thrice in the first season of the SA20 last year. Super Kings defeated the Eastern Cape in both the league stage matches. Eastern Cape finished in third place with four wins in 10 matches last season. Super Kings had won six out of 10 matches and were in second place at the end of the group stage.
They faced each other in the semi-final, where Super Kings won the toss and elected to bowl. Aiden Markram scored 100 runs off 58 deliveries and helped the Eastern Cape post a total of 213 runs for the loss of five wickets in 20 overs. Lizaad Williams was the pick of the bowlers and took four wickets for 36 runs in four overs.
Reeza Hendricks played a crucial knock of 96 runs off 54 deliveries for the Super Kings and missed on a well-deserved century. In the end, Super Kings managed to post a total of 199 runs for the loss of six wickets and lost the match by 14 runs. Roelof van der Merwe was the most successful bowler for the Easten Cape and took two wickets for 23 runs in four overs.
Eastern Cape defeated Pretoria Capitals in the final by four wickets after chasing down the mere target of 136 runs in 16.2 overs. van der Merwe played a crucial role with the ball again and took four wickets for 31 runs in four overs. He was adjudged Player of the Match, while Markram won the Player of the Tournament award.
