Sydney Thunder (THU) and Melbourne Stars (STA) will take on each other in the season opener of the Big Bash League 2022 on Tuesday (December 13) at the Manuka Oval in Canberra. Thunder won nine out of 14 matches last season and qualified for the playoffs. They lost the knockout game against Adelaide Strikers by a mere margin of six runs before getting eliminated. They released a couple of players, including Usman Khawaja, who captained the side last season. They managed to acquire the services of David Warner, who will be available for selection after the Test series against South Africa. David Willey was also picked during the draft; however, he has been replaced by Fazalhaq Farooqi after Willey decided to withdraw from the competition. Rilee Rossouw is another addition to the squad and will likely continue his excellent form from the T20 World Cup. Jason Sangha finished the last season as the leading run-scorer and is named the side's captain for this season.

Melbourne Stars has named Adam Zampa as the side's captain this season. He has replaced Glenn Maxwell, who broke his leg last month and has been replaced by Tom Rogers. Trent Boult has also been picked for the side; however, he will be leaving the tournament midway before the start of the ILT20 tournament. Cambell Kellaway, the 20-year-old batter, has signed a one-year deal with the team. He recently scored a century for Cricket Australia XI in the practice game against South Africa. Luke Wood, the left-arm pacer who made his international debut for England this year, is also there in the squad and will likely feature in the playing 11 for this opening game.
