Fast bowlers might need 4-6 weeks to get into rhythm once cricket resumes: Irfan Pathan
Irfan had also censured the saliva ban while stating that the rule hampers the possibility of a bowler achieving the reverse swing.
England and West Indies recently braced the field for the first time amid COVID-19 pandemic to mark the return of international cricket. The first Test between both the sides showcased a lot of significant changes as the players were playing under a bio-secure environment.
To curb the risk of COVID-19 transmission, the players also followed the newly-introduced interim ICC regulations including the ban on usage of saliva. Many members of the cricketing fraternity, post ICC’s decision to put a halt at the usage of saliva, had expressed their disapproval.
Many former players had even opined that banning saliva would take the game completely away from the bowlers. Saliva, used to shine the ball, is an essential weapon for any pacer to generate a considerable amount of swing during the match.
Former India all-rounder had also censured the saliva ban while stating that the rule hampers the possibility of a bowler achieving the reverse swing. He had also suggested the ICC to allow the usage of external substances to shine the ball.
Recently, Irfan also pointed out that the pacers will have a tough time to recover upon the return of international cricket. According to Irfan, it takes 4-6 weeks for a fast bowler to get back into his rhythm.
I am really worried about fast bowlers: Irfan Pathan
“To be honest, I am really worried about fast bowlers. Going forward, they might need 4-6 weeks to get going themselves. It’s a tough job and if you are bowling 140-150 kmph, running about 25 yards to bowl one ball at a time and then keep bowling for a few overs,” said Irfan on Star Sports’ Cricket Connected.
“Your body gets stiff, injury management will be key as well because I think for any fast bowler to get back into the rhythm, it takes at least 4-6 weeks, so I think fast bowlers will have to be a little more careful than the spinners or the batsmen,” added Irfan, who represented India in 29 Tests, 120 ODIs and 24 T20Is.
Irfan was known for his ability to swing the ball effectively. Hailing from Baroda, Irfan’s batting and bowling forte often led to people comparing him with the legendary Kapil Dev.
