Vidarbha created history when they entered the finals of India‘s domestic championship, Ranji Trophy after they beat Karnataka in a close semi-final encounter. It was Rajneesh Gurbani’s 7-fer in the 2nd innings which won them the berth for the title clash where they will take on Delhi.
Vidarbha skipper Faiz Fazal had led the team by example throughout the season with brilliant batting and has been well supported by the seamers. Experienced Wasim Jaffer has been a great help for Fazal. India’s star cricketer Suresh Raina who has played with and against the 32-year-old on a number of occasions said that he is very happy for Fazal and the form he has been in this season.
A fighter
Raina who was speaking to TOI said that Fazal is a fighter and his solidity at the top is one of the reasons why Vidarbha has been so successful this season. “He has good technique and looks solid whenever he bats. He has a lot of experience now. Fazal’s solidity at the top is one of the reasons for Vidarbha’s success,” said Rain.
Remembering his playing days with the veteran left-hander, he said: “We have played together at different levels. I remember having a long partnership with him in one of the Zonal Under-16 cricket matches in Jamshedpur. I scored 250, while Faiz scored 200-odd. He has been consistent since those days.”
Raina congratulated the Vidarbha Cricket Association and wished the team luck for the finals. “They are playing very good cricket. They have it in them to go all the way. The way Vidarbha have played this season shows any team can play Ranji Trophy final if it shows determination, dedication and willingness to work hard. They have so much of talent,” said Raina who is looking forward to the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
He also praised the supporting staff, the Jaffer and Indian pacer Umesh Yadav. “Vidarbha have good coaches and support staff. Senior player Wasim Jaffer has mentored the side well. Umesh Yadav playing for India has also made a big difference in the region. I wish Vidarbha good luck for the finals,” said Raina while speaking to TOI.
Indore will be hosting the sides for the final encounter which starts on 29th December.
