If I am feeling low, I talk to Sreesanth and he responds: Basil Thampi

Basil Thampi has been one of the inspiring success stories of the Indian Premier League (IPL) since last year when he made his debut while playing for Gujarat Lions. He also won the ‘Emerging Player’ award in 2017 following his ability to bowl pinpoint yorkers at pace. He recently got picked in the National squad as well for the series against Sri Lanka at home. However, the youngster thanks everyone who has given him valuable advice during his career as he revealed that he speaks to Sreesanth whenever he feels low.

Interestingly, Sreesanth’s career turned upside down after he was allegedly caught in the spot-fixing scandal in the IPL back in 2013. Though he has been cleared from the case now, BCCI has banned from playing from any cricket and he is still fighting for his rights. But he finds a special mention in Thampi’s list of advisers.

Basil Thampi, while speaking in an interview to Hindustan Times, revealed that he speaks to S Sreesanth whenever he is feeling low and his advice always helps him in rejuvenating himself. “Yeah, I speak with Sree bhai also when I have some doubt. If I am feeling low, I message him and he replies. He tells me what to do in certain situations, or things that I ought to have done. He motivates me,” he said.

Thampi is currently playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the ongoing season of the IPL and played his first game of the season against Mumbai. He fared decently and also went on to pick a couple of wickets. It will be important for him to continue in the same vein as the national selector MSK Prasad recently messaged him to keep working hard. He is surely under the radar of the selectors and soon he might debut for India.

“After the 2017 edition, I got a chance in Deodhar Trophy, Duleep Trophy, India A (Away tour of South Africa and home series against New Zealand). I got selected in the India team also for the Sri Lanka tour. MSK Prasad recently texted me to keep practicing hard,” he added.
