Jasprit Bumrah has been a sensation in India’s Test series against Australia which is coming to an end now. The 25-year-old bowler, who has impressed all from both sides in this series and has taken 21 scalps so far to become the joint highest wicket-taker, picked only one wicket in the first innings of the fourth Test in Sydney but that solitary wicket showed his class once again. It was the fourth day and Bumrah’s scalp was Peter Handscomb, who returned to the Australian side after missing the game in Melbourne.

The hosts resumed their batting on Day 4 from their overnight score of 236 for 6, needing another 187 runs to save the follow-on. However, Pat Cummins did not last long after resumption and Handscomb, the last of the recognised batsmen, fell after Australia added 21 runs to their overnight score. It was the fourth delivery of the 90th over when Bumrah produced a stunning delivery. It was pitched well outside the right-hander’s off-stump the ball kept low and nipped into Handscomb.

He was trying to play at it too far away from his body, there was a huge gap between bat and pad – as Sunil Gavaskar would say one could drive a tractor through it. The ball took an inside edge and rattled his stumps after being deflected onto his pads. The reactions that followed from both Bumrah and Handscomb summarised the feeling in their respective team camps.

Here is the video of the wicket:

Rain delayed the start of play on the penultimate day of the Test and India were quick to get back to their task although the last pair of Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood delayed the inevitable by adding 42 runs. Australia were all out for 300, conceding a lead of 322 runs and Indian captain Virat Kohli enforced the follow-on, much to the glee of the Indian fans. Kuldeep Yadav took 5 for 99, his second five-wicket haul in the longer format. Australia were 6 for no loss in their second innings, requiring another 317 runs to make India bat again.

Bumrah still has a day to become the highest wicket-taker of the series by bettering Australia’s Nathan Lyon’s haul of 21 and complete 50 wickets in Tests as the fastest Indian pacer. The visitors lead 2-1 in the series and are just a day away from claiming their first Test series victory in Australia.
