Neil Wagner has surfaced as a skilful second fiddle to the new-ball bowlers of the BlackCaps in Tim Southee and Trent Boult. Having made his debut in 2012, the left-arm quick steadily kept on putting encouraging performances to cement his spot in the side. His best year was the year 2016 in which he claimed 41 wickets in nine games at an average of 21.

The 33-year old’s may not generate a searing pace, but his swing can outsmart and pass through the defences of the best batsmen. The addition of reverse swing into his arsenal of tricks enables him to snare wickets even in pitches not conducive to fast bowling.

The South African-born is currently ranked number three in the ICC Test rankings for the bowlers, courtesy his five-wicket haul against England in the second innings of the first Test in Mount Maunganui. The veteran’s tenacious attitude would undoubtedly provide a massive challenge to the doggedness of the Indian batsmen.
