#1 – Unhealthy relationship with Anil Kumble

Easily one of the biggest and worst points occurred in Kohli’s career when former Indian coach Anil Kumble stated in his resignation letter that the Indian captain was unhappy with his work mechanism. That sent shock waves across the fraternity and Kohli was at the receiving end of some brutal criticism.

Anil Kumble is a disciplinarian par excellence and apparently, his head-masterly attitude didn’t go down well with Kohli. After India got humiliated in the hands of Pakistan in the 2017 Champions Trophy final, Kumble stepped down and once again, Ravi Shastri came into power.

BCCI had reported the legendary leggie that Kohli had his reservations with Kumble’s style and his continuation. Former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar, alongside many others, battered the decision taken by BCCI and these were difficult months for Kohli to cope with.

“So you want softies. You want somebody to just tell you, ‘ok boys, don’t practice today because you guys are not feeling well, ok take a holiday, go shopping’. If somebody is a hard taskmaster and he has got you results like Anil Kumble has got over the last one year and any of the players are complaining, I feel those players are the ones who should be left out of the team,” Gavaskar famously said in an interview with NDTV.
