Hitting sixes in limited-overs cricket has become a very common phenomenon in today’s modern-day game. With the quality of bats and pitches better suited for batting, even the tail-enders can clear the ropes very easily. In fact, in the T20s, the teams always look to score the bulk of runs by smashing boundaries.
The 20-over format is mostly the game of fours and sixes. However, there have been several other batters who have done well by running well between the wickets and hitting odd boundaries in between. On that note, let us look at-
5 players who have not hit a six in T20Is
1. Imam-ul-Haq (Pakistan)
Pakistan opening batter Imam-ul-Haq has become a regular feature for his national side. After doing well for Pakistan in the 50-over format, Imam got his maiden T20 call up in May 2019 to play against home-side England.
The 26-year-old could not perform well for his side in the debut match, as he managed to score only seven runs off ten deliveries, without hitting a single boundary. The match was also won by England, as they chased a target of 174 with four balls to spare in their chase.
The Lahore-born batter played his second T20I match against Australia in November 2019. Opening the innings along with skipper Babar Azam, Imam did manage to get a start (14 off 15 balls). However, he was scalped by Australian pacer, Sean Abbott. The left-handed batter stroked two fours, but could not clear the ropes. Since then, Imam has not represented Pakistan in the 20-over format.
2. Alastair Cook (England)
Sir Alastair Cook was one of the finest batters to play the game of cricket for England. The 37-year old had scored more than 12,000 runs in the longest format of the game. However, when it comes to the 20-over format, Cook has not much to show in his records.
The left-handed batter represented England in four T20 matches in which he managed to make 61 runs at an average of 15.25. His strike rate was also not much impressive as he scored his runs at 112.96. Cook had stroked ten fours in his short T20I career but never managed to clear the ropes for a maximum.
Cook was a technically sound batter and never relied on strength to make runs for himself. However, as the numbers reflect, the left-handed batter was one of the legends to play for England. To note, Cook had hit 21 sixes in 253 matches he played including both ODIs and Tests.
3. Wavell Hinds (West Indies)
West Indies batting all-rounder Wavell Hinds was one of the finest ball hitters during the early 2000s. After making his ODI debut in 1999, Hinds had to wait for about six years to get his call-up to the T20 squad. The 45-year old made his debut against New Zealand in February 2006.
Hinds represented the Men in Maroon in five T20 matches in which he managed to score just 30 runs with a poor average of seven. The left-handed batter stroked three fours in his short T20 career, but never managed to clear the ropes for a six.
Hinds also represented West Indies in 45 Tests and 119 ODIs in which he had hit 16 and 50 sixes respectively. Talking about his bowling, the medium-pacer scalped a total of 44 wickets including both ODIs and Tests.
4. BJ Watling (New Zealand)
New Zealand wicketkeeper-batter BJ Watling comes fourth in the list. The right-handed batter made his T20I debut for the Kiwis in November 2009 against Pakistan and played his last match against West Indies in July 2014.
The 36-year old represented New Zealand in five T20 matches in which he scored only 38 runs at an average of 9.5. Watling never managed to clear the ropes for a maximum in his T20I career but had stroked three fours. It was also quite evident that Watling was not much of a big hitter, as he played with a strike rate of 65.52.
Talking about his Test and ODI career, the wicketkeeper-batter played a total of 103 matches including both formats. He scored more than 4,000 runs in his career and cleared the boundary 11 times. To note, Watling had scored a double-hundred in the longest format of the game.
5. Chris Cairns (New Zealand)
Chris Cairns was one of the finest all-rounders to have graced the game of cricket and is considered a legend in New Zealand. The Kiwi all-rounder had represented his country in 269 matches including all three formats of the game.
After making his name in Tests and ODIs, Cairns made his T20I debut in February 2005 against Australia and he played his last match against West Indies in February 2006. The 51-year old represented New Zealand in only two T20Is before drawing the curtains in the 20-over format.
Cairns made only three runs in two T20I matches he played in his career. However, that does not reflect his true colors. In 267 matches including both ODIs and Tests, Cairns scored 8,270 runs with a total of nine centuries under his belt. Cairns had hit 87 sixes in Tests and cleared the ropes 153 times in his ODI career.
