Fixing still exists in all levels: Waqar Younis
Waqar Younis also said that he will do his part to make youngsters aware of the malpractice.
Former Pakistan captain and coach Waqar Younis has sent out a warning saying that fixing still exists in cricket. He added that it is important to come together to reduce the sin. Waqar is Islamabad United’s director for the third edition of the Pakistan Super League, which will be staged next year, The team have now lost two promising stars in the face of Sharjeel Khan and Khalid Latif, as they are serving 5-year bans due to match-fixing.
Another cricketer Mohammad Irfan was banned for a year, with six months suspension. He will be available for the next edition of the PSL. Waqar was not actively part of the PSL then, he was associated with the league as a cricket commentator.
Roots are very deep
“The roots of fixing are very deep,” said Waqar at an Islamabad United press conference. “It still exists at all levels so we need to have joint and concerted efforts to eradicate this menace.”
The legendary pacer also said that he will play his part in guiding the youngsters on how to avoid such situations and not play a victim to the scenario. “My prime task will be to guide the players on and off the field and tell them how to avoid this malpractice as this can easily derail a good career.”
He was also impressed with the recent success on hosting international games in Pakistan but said that the road is going to be challenging as the other teams need to be convinced to come and play in the country.“With Sri Lanka coming to Lahore, and before that the World XI series and the final of the PSL – that all changed conceptions about Pakistan though we still need to convince the foreign players to tour us and not fear about security.” he said.
