As he celebrates his special day today, here’s revisiting his love story as to how he met his wife Dona Roy.

The couple knew each other since their early childhood days. While going for football practice, Ganguly used to often spot her as she lived near his place. Opening up on a talk show conducted by Anurag Basu, Sourav Ganguly said that whilst playing football or going somewhere, he use to spot Dona quite a few times.

“While playing football, while going somewhere- I could see her, maybe way too much,” said Sourav to Anurag Basu as reported by News 18, Cricket Next. The couple met each other for their first date in a Chinese restaurant, in Kolkata where Dona was amazed by the amount of food Ganguly had ordered owing to his nervousness. It further added to her amusement when he actually ate all the food.

Ganguly scripted his dream debut when he hit a century at Lord’s in the year 1996 and made it to the honors board. When he returned back to India, he had the ploy in his mind which eventually failed as they exchanged vows at Ganguly’s friend’s place. They had to keep their marriage a secret and later when Dona’s family got one with the fact they were angry but eventually accepted them. “I did not elope with Dona. We returned home. We just kept the wedding a secret.” Ganguly told Basu in the interview.

After a lot of ebbs and flows, the couple officially tied the knot on 1st February 1997 in the presence of their family and several cricketers who were invited for the occasion. And to put it in a filmy manner, they lived happily ever after.
