Flashback: When Herschelle Gibbs was young Virat Kohli's favourite cricketer
Kohli's statement has come under the scanner.
Indian captain and ace batsman Virat Kohli has found himself in a spot after asking a fan who is not convinced about his batting to reside in some other country. The 30-year-old cricketer, who generally enjoys a massive fan following, for his incredibly consistent performance on the ground, has found criticism pouring him, even from some the brands he endorses, for addressing the fan the way he did.
In a video available on his newly launched app, Kohli was seen reading tweets and Instagram messages wherein he bumped into a fan who did not find his batting special and said he had a better liking for English and Australian batsmen. The observation seemed to have irked Kohli who then came up with a reply which many saw to be arrogant. Even politicians and cricket commentators took a stand on the issue with some backing him and others criticising.
Young Kohli’s favourite cricketer
That there could be more trolling against the Indian captain was assumed when one of the Twitter users shared a video of a young Virat Kohli. In the video which dates back to 2008, Kohli was seen batting in the U19 World Cup held that year and saying on his arrival at the crease that his favourite cricketer is South Africa’s Herschelle Gibbs and not someone from India. Memes were also doing the rounds showing the cricketer with a German automobile and saying that if did not like Indian brands like Tatas and Mahindras, Kohli should start living in Germany.
He has been rested for the ongoing T20I series against the Windies which India have won with one game to spare. He had a magnificent ODI series against the same opponents before the T20Is as he slammed three consecutive hundreds to win the man of the series award. India won the series 3-1.
The skipper will be back to don the captaincy hat after India reach Australia later this month to play three T20Is, four Tests and three ODIs.
