Team India’s fab four were at the fag end of their careers when MS Dhoni was appointed the captain of the Test side. He had a great relationship with all the players and even the senior cricketers were enjoying to play under his captaincy. VVS Laxman has taken us down the memory lane in his autobiography ‘281 and beyond’ recalling how Dhoni once had drove the team bus in his 100th Test match.

Anil Kumble had just retired then after the third Test of the four-match series and Dhoni was appointed at the helm on a permanent basis for the first time. Laxman, along with the senior players, was the vital cog of the team then and was set to play his 100th game in whites for the country.

He never lost the joy and playfulness

VVS Laxman shared one of his best memories in his book and explained how he was left awestruck to see MS Dhoni take the driver’s seat during his landmark Test match. He also went on to mention that the former Indian captain is so down to earth and loves to enjoy his game.

“One of my abiding memories is of MS (Dhoni) driving the team bus to the hotel in Nagpur, during my 100th Test. I couldn’t believe my eyes — the captain of the team driving us back from the ground! It was his first Test in charge after Anil’s (Kumble) retirement, and he didn’t seem to have a care in the world. But he was like that, playful and grounded. MS never lost the joy, the playfulness. I have never met anyone quite like him,” Laxman wrote in the book according to Times Now.

Laxman also revealed how MS Dhoni eased his nerves when he was going through a rough patch in 2011 and was failing to deliver on a consistent basis and was in awe of his calmness and eqianimity.

“MS Dhoni’s calmness and equanimity are legendary. He had seen nothing but success until the tour of England in 2011. We had lost 4–0 in England and had already lost the first three Tests in Australia by the end of that year, and were heading for another whitewash. I was a mess, as were most of the guys, but MS was unbelievably composed. Not once did he lash out, and at no stage did he give the impression that he was frustrated or helpless,” he further wrote.
