Flashback: When MS Dhoni lost his cool after an on-field mistake
The ever calm and composed Indian wicket-keeper lost his cool and yelled at an outfield player for a goof-up.
It is rare, almost next to none that we see MS Dhoni getting angry at a player for a mistake. The ever calm and composed Indian wicket-keeper lost his cool and yelled at an outfield player for a goof-up. The fielder who was under the scanner was none other than Indian leggie Yuzvendra Chahal. The event transcribed during the 3rd T20I against England at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, 2017.
In the second over of the innings during the English chase, Jason Roy was at the crease alongside the Test captain Joe Root. The visitors had just lost their opener Sam Billings cheaply in the opening overs of their innings. The right-handed Root had punched the ball towards mid-off calling for a single but was quick to change his mind once he saw the ball blazing towards the bowler Chahal at the non-striker’s end.
What happened next led to Dhoni’s anger
Jason Roy could not go back and was caught in two minds as it required a simple swish from Chahal to run the batsman out. But in the goof-up and tension, the leggie from Haryana messed it up. The leggie collected the ball and instead of knocking the bails out, he threw it to the striker’s end.
What happened in the end, was the English opener made the home very easily. This left the former Indian skipper fuming and had a go at the leggie for not having the presence of mind to knock the bails off. It was a very different MS Dhoni that the crowd managed to witness at the Chinnaswamy stadium, as he was seen agitated with the leggie’s attempt.
Chahal, however, made up for the incident in fine fashion. The 27-year-old spinner went on to pick his career best of six for 25 runs to give India an easy victory. England, consequently lost the match by a huge margin of 75 runs as India picked up an easy victory at home.
