'For a team to work, it is not about just one individual' - MI head coach Mahela Jayawardene on Rohit Sharma's poor form in IPL 2022

The IPL 2022 has been a forgettable one for the Mumbai Indians. While they did win their first match of this season against an in-form Rajasthan Royals last week, it was too late as they had already been knocked out of the tournament having lost eight games prior to that solitary win as they still find themselves at the bottom of the points table.

Meanwhile, MI head coach Mahela Jayawardene has explained what has gone wrong with the franchise this time around and highlighted the areas where they struggled throughout the season. At the same time, the Sri Lankan icon also spoke on skipper Rohit Sharma’s poor form where he just could not convert his good starts into impactful knocks on a few occasions.

Rohit Sharma is disappointed that he has been unable to convert starts into big ones

“Let me answer that in a much fairer way. Yes, as you rightly said Ro (Rohit Sharma) has been brilliant in batting for long periods, getting those big scores consistently and the rest of the guys have batted around him. He knows he had starts and he is disappointed that he has been unable to convert them into big ones.

“For a team to work it is not about just one individual, it is about a team executing a game plan. The way we have structured our lineup this season, that is something we have lacked and at the top,” said Jayawardene while speaking to reporters ahead of MI’s next game

Apart from that the former Sri Lankan captain also said that the five-time champions did not have quality finishers at the backend just like the consistent performers of the table-toppers Gujarat Titans including David Miller, Rashid Khan and Rahul Tewatia, etc,

The Mumbai-based franchise failed to click as a unit in all three departments throughout this season. The batting and bowling was a let down and changing the team combination at regular intervals also did not help Mumbai’s cause. The Rohit Sharma-led side would be eyeing a second win when they face the Gujarat Titans at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai on May 6.
