For Kiran More, MS Dhoni’s knock against RCB turned back the clock
Dhoni has been batting well this IPL just like the last, amassing 314 runs in nine matches at an average of 104 plus.
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain MS Dhoni is not one who can be kept away from cricket for long. After having missed the game against Sunrisers Hyderabad that his team lost comprehensively, the ace wicketkeeper-batsman was back to lead his side against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and played a valiant knock of 84 not out off 48 balls (five fours and seven sixes) but could not see CSK home.
The man, who had played a similar knock at the same venue last year for a winning cause last year, though made the fans and one particular man happy with his show. Former India wicketkeeper Kiran More had a tough fight in his hand as the chief selector in 2004 to ensure Dhoni, then a 23-year-old lad was picked in the Indian side. The then India captain, Sourav Ganguly, too had a role behind selecting the Ranchi cricketer but it was More who had handpicked him while looking for a bunch of talented cricketers that were considered the future of Indian cricket.
More was a content man when Dhoni was destroying the RCB bowling attack at M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Saturday and took a ride on the time machine to revisit 2006 when he would finish games off in style.
Dhoni almost took 26 runs in last over
CSK needed 26 runs from six deliveries to win the game and Dhoni made it almost possible by hitting Umesh Yadav for 24 runs in the first five balls. Although CSK could not win, their highest scorer this season, i.e., Dhoni, showed that he is far from a spent force at 37 and can still do enough for India in the upcoming ICC World Cup.
Speaking about Dhoni, More said age is never a criterion but just a number. “Oh! He was brilliant. It was an outstanding innings and only goes to show age is never a criteria. Dhoni is in top form and age is just a number. Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid all played till late in their career and with distinction,” India Today cited reports as quoting Dhoni as saying.
“The innings took me back to 2006 and maybe, around that time when a young Dhoni took the scene by storm,” More said.
