A lot of Pakistani fans might think Salman Butt’s international career is over, but the Cricketer himself doesn’t think the same. The left handed opener who is in his mid-thirties now is still trying his hardest for a national comeback. The reason why Butt is adamant on playing for Pakistan again is because he wants to change his image in people’s mind. He doesn’t want people to remember him for that spot-fixing saga only which got him banned from the game for five years.
Caught in the spot-fixing saga
Butt was the captain of the Pakistani side when the spot fixing saga broke out in 2010 and as it was revealed, he had got two of his bowlers to bowl no-balls deliberately in a Test match against England on the instructions of the bookies. ICC handed out punishment to all the three players which not only included the ban, but the jail terms as well. Butt however has completed the ban period as well has served the jail term and is now perfectly eligible to serve Pakistan again.
But the problem is that Pakistan is not short of options at the top of the order at the moment. There are some young, talented players performing consistently and the selectors have been very hesitant to go a step backward and recall a veteran like Butt.
Scoring loads in domestic Cricket
Butt, however, has not given up and is doing what he is supposed to do by scoring heaps of runs in domestic Cricket. In the recently concluded domestic T20 competition in Pakistan, the southpaw created the world record of building the highest opening partnership in the shortest format of the game by adding 209 runs for the first wicket with his partner Kamran Akmal.
Butt is hopeful that the selectors will take note of his performances sooner or later and he will be able to don the green jersey again.
Speaking to Geo TV, the former Pakistani skipper said, “I hope to get an opportunity to play for Pakistan in the last years of my career. I hope to perform well and eliminate the negative impression that people have of me.”
