Former England captain Chris Cowdrey turns Pro-Kabbadi League auctioneer

Cricket is filled with oddities and instances that make for very good trivia. The game of cricket can be dated back to its original form in 1567. Since then the game evolved to what we see now, with the first Test being played in 1877, the first ODI in 1971 and first T20I in 2005.

The game has been constantly evolving and there are many firsts in cricket. One of the biggest honors for any player is to play for his/her country and to represent the nation in Test cricket. Some of the Test cricketers have had a fulfilling career with records galore, while some have gone onto newer pastures and taken on different careers.

One such former Test cricketer Chris Cowdrey of England has gone to become one of the best auctioneers in the field and was recently seen doing duties in the Pro-Kabaddi League, which features the best of the best professional Kabaddi players in the world.

Chris Cowdrey and his famous first Test wicket on debut

When you hear the surname Cowdrey, every die-hard cricket fan remembers the more famous person and cricketer Colin Cowdrey, who played for England from 1954-1974 and was the first player to appear in 100 Test matches, which came against Australia in 1968. Chris Cowdrey is the son of this famous former England captain and played cricket for Kent in England County circuit.

Following a good season with Kent, Chris Cowdrey was included in the England squad for the tour of India in 1984-85 and he made his Test debut in the Bombay Test match. Captain David Gower asked Cowdrey, who was fielding at short-leg, to bowl and Cowdrey started his maiden over in Tests while forgetting that he was still wearing his shin pads.

On the fourth ball of his over, he bowled Indian all-rounder Kapil Dev, who was later named by Wisden as India’s cricketer of the 20th century. He became the 19th England bowler to take a wicket in his first over. Incidentally, his father Colin was listening to the commentary of the match in his car and was so surprised that he drove the wrong way down a one-way street.

Chris Cowdrey went on to play 6 Tests and 3 ODIs for England, even captaining England in the fourth Test of the five-match series against the West Indies in 1988 in the infamous “summer of four captains”.
