Former England and Middlesex wicketkeeper-batsman, John Murray has passed away at the age of 83. He played 21 Test matches for his country and scored a century against Windies during his 6-year long career. However, he endured an illustrious domestic career by playing 635 first-class matches in which he went on to score 18872 runs. He was also part of the Middlesex team in 149 List-A games during which he affected close to 200 dismissals behind the wickets.

Murray also claimed a whopping 1527 dismissals in first-class cricket which is the second most on the all-time list. He became ill after Middlesex defeated Warwickshire at Lord’s on Tuesday in the ongoing County Championship and passed away later in the evening.

Middlesex Club President John Emburey termed him as the best wicketkeeper of the club and also went on to say that his name will be the first on the team sheet if an all-time XI for Middlesex is to be picked.

“Losing JT is a devastating blow to Middlesex Cricket. He is undoubtedly the finest wicketkeeper in the history of the Club and would be one of the first names on any team sheet when picking an all-time Middlesex XI. What he achieved is unlikely to be repeated,” he was quoted as saying by BBC.

He served the club magnificently

John Emburey also highlighted John Murray’s contribution to the County club after hanging his boots and hailed him for the same.

“He was not only a very fine cricketer but was a fine man – loyal and committed to Middlesex Cricket. He was a Middlesex man through and through and he continued to serve the club magnificently after retirement as a Committee man, confidant and, most of all supporter. In many ways, it was fitting that his last day was spent at Lord’s enjoying a Middlesex victory.

“The thoughts and prayers of everyone associated with Middlesex go out to his family and friends at this desperately sad time,” he concluded.
