Former England skipper David Gower is impressed with Sourav Ganguly’s leadership skills. He lauded the former India captain for his work as the BCCI President so far and believes heading the world’s richest board in cricket is the toughest job at the moment.
Sourav Ganguly formally took charge of the top BCCI post in October last year and has been at the forefront of some important decisions. He also expressed his wish to improve the state of the domestic players in the country. However, he has been dealing with the pandemic over the last couple of months and even had to suspend the 13th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) until further notice.
Coming back to Gower, he praised Ganguly for the way he has handled things at the BCCI so far during his short term at the helm. “One thing I have learnt over the years is that if you are going to run BCCI, you need to be many, many things. Having a reputation like he (Ganguly) has is a very good start, but you need to be a very deft politician. You need to have control of a million different things,” he said ahead of “Q20”, a chat show for the fans presented by ‘GloFans’.
David Gower believes Sourav Ganguly has political skills
David Gower also feels that Sourav Ganguly has the political skills to handle multiple things at the same time. He also pointed out that the latter has the perfect attitude and has no doubt that he will do a commendable job during his stint as the BCCI President. He also understands that leading the BCCI is not an easy job by any means as billions of fans follow cricket in India.
Moreover, the 63-year-old also indirectly hinted at the possibility of Ganguly becoming the ICC President in future. “We all know about the immense following for cricket in India. So it is indeed a wonderful thing to behold. Sourav has the toughest task imaginable in charge of BCCI, but so far I would say the signs are very good. He has listened, given his own opinion and has pulled strings gently.
“He is a very, very good man and has those political skills. He has the right attitude and can keep things together and will do good job. And if you do a good job as BCCI chief in the future, who knows? But I would actually say the more important job, to be honest, is running BCCI. Being head of ICC is an honour, there is a lot that can be done by ICC, but actually look at the rankings, look at where the power is heading up. BCCI is definitely the bigger job,” Gower added.
