Mohammad Azharuddin’s cricket career at a glance

No other cricketer has experienced highs and lows in their life as the former Indian captain Mohammad Azharuddin. Azharuddin was a revelation for the Indian contingent in the early 80s and was regarded as a batting prodigy for his exemplary performances both at home and overseas. The right-hander had proudly announced himself on the big stage in a Test outing against England on December 31, 1984, at Eden Gardens by slamming a spectacular century.

This was followed by the cricketer establishing himself as an attacking middle-order batsman along with one of the best fielders in international cricket. In his international career of 18 years, Azharuddin featured in as many as 99 Test matches amassing a whopping 6215 runs at a stunning average of over 45. He also had 9378 runs under his belt in 334 One Day Internationals at 36.9.

Azharuddin has even better records while leading the Men in Blue as statistically, he is India’s one of the most successful captains of all time. He had replaced Srikkanth as the captain of the Indian side in February 1990 and went on to lead the country in Tests and ODIs for a major portion of the 90s. Under his leadership, India won 103 ODI games and 14 Test fixtures and he was widely hailed for his leadership qualities.

However, the right-hander was forced to take retirement from the gentleman’s game as he was found guilty in a match-fixing scandal and a lifetime ban was imposed on him by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in 2000.
