Ex Indian cricketer Amit Bhandari was rushed to the hospital after receiving several injuries on Monday. Bhandari is the chairman of the Delhi and Districts Cricket Association (DDCA) senior selection committee. Apparently, there were trials going on at the St Stephens Ground, on Monday, where the assault took place. The group of attackers was reportedly led by a discontented Under-23 player, who wasn’t selected in the team.
The guilty, Anuj Dheda, was not selected in the state team. Hence, he took to violence against Bhandari for revenge. The fringe of goons, including Dedha, fled before the cops could reach the spot. A couple of attackers have now been arrested. “Based on the complaint, a case has been registered and the accused and his brother Naresh were arrested,” the DCP was quoted as saying in News 18.
The trails were for the selection of the team for the U-23 Mushtaq Ali Trophy. The incident took place at around 1 pm in the afternoon. “Around 1 pm, two-three players came to him (Bhandari) and started hitting him with a bat on his head. He was bleeding and was rushed to the hospital,” a DDCA official had revealed.
Bhandari got seven stitches for cuts on his legs and head. He was wounded severely before he was taken to the hospital by his co-selector Sukhvinder Singh. To throw more light on this case, Bhandari after the attack said: “I’ve given my statement to the police. I’ve given them the reason of selection and the names (of attackers) as well.”
Cause and course of the assault
The actual reason for Anuj Dedha’s non-selection was his age. Dedha’s name featured in the initial 79-member list, released by the DDCA in November for the U-23 trials. As per the probables’ list, his date of birth is November 22, 1995. According to an eye witness, Dedha and his fellow goons pursued Bhandari in presence of the senior team players. Bhandari reportedly ran for his life.
“I was not there when these two guys came and spoke with Bhandari. He is obviously rattled and once he gives his statement to the police, we will get to know more,” the witness said.
