Former Indian off spinner Ramesh Powar announces retirement: Former Indian off spinner Ramesh Powar has stated that he would retire from international cricket after 2015-16 Ranji Trophy season. He boasts an illustrious domestic career with 341 wickets. He made his international debut in the year 2004 and initially showed some promising signs. But his rather indolent fielding skills and a gradual dip in form unfortunately ensured that he was eventually going to be dropped from the side thereafter.
Even after that he performed really well in the domestic circuit. But he couldn’t make a strong comeback into the side as his playing days coincided with the playing days of stellar spinners like Harbhajan Singh. Later on after the emergence of R.Ashwin, India didn’t seem like requiring the services of Powar anymore.
He has played for Gujarat since the 2014-15 season, following a year with Rajasthan. Before that, he had represented Mumbai for 14 seasons. Between 2004 and 2007, he had played for the country too, in two Tests and 31 ODIs, taking six wickets in the longest format and 34 in the one-dayers.
He is also a rather useful batsman at the tail and has an ODI fifty against his name. It is a little sad moment for Indian cricket fans that the talented 37 year old had to announce his retirement without making much of a mark in the international scene notwithstanding his impressive domestic career.
