For those who’ve seen the ODI opener against Sri Lanka, they know why MS Dhoni is regarded as a pundit of the game. For those who didn’t, the article will give you a brief insight as to what champion material, Dhoni is made of. Unable to cope up with the new ball burst from Sri Lanka, India at one point was reeling at 29 for 7. However, Dhoni came up with yet another rescue with a scintillating 65, scoring more than half of India’s 112-run total.
He has the best eye and cricketing brain and he proved it once again why he’s a great reader of the game. The ex-Indian captain saved an important wicket for India after he took a DRS review even before the umpire could raise his finger to give the decision of out.
However, Dhoni’s innings was a strong hit to the chin of the critics who debated over he should retire or not. However, former Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly doesn’t fall amongst them. Ganguly believes the wicketkeeper batsman’s ability to play matured innings is the reason why Virat Kohli has been backing him in ODIs. He lauded the 36-year-old for his valiant innings, although India slumped to a seven-wicket defeat to the Islanders at Dharamsala.
Ganguly on Dhoni
Speaking to India Today after the game, Ganguly said, “Very much [Dhoni’s experience key to India]. He showed that today. The fast bowlers had already finished six-seven overs when he came in. But still, it’s a one-ball game, he needed to hang around.”
He added, “He attacked when needed and rotated when needed. It’s a terrific inning from Dhoni. It was a matured inning. That is why Virat Kohli persists with him in 50-over cricket. That is why he is important to Team India in the 50-over format for whatever time he decides to play.”
