Ever since the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy in England, where they beat India in the final, Pakistan haven’t had the best of times in international cricket by any means, especially the ODI format. The Men in Green are ranked sixth and they haven’t won much in the version in the last year or so. Recently, Shoaib Malik and Co played a five-match ODI series against Australia, captained by Aaron Finch.
A lot of their major players were rested and Shoaib Malik was appointed as the skipper. The hosts turned out to be no match for the Aussies and got whitewashed 5-0. The closest they came to a victory was in the fourth ODI at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, where Pakistan lost by six runs despite centuries from the likes of the debutant in Abid Ali and Mohammad Rizwan.
In the meantime, Shoaib Mohammad, the former Pakistan cricketer, lashed out at head coach Mickey Arthur. He mentioned that only having a coaching degree doesn’t guarantee success in the coaching field and one also needs to be successful in playing cricket at the highest level.
Shoaib lashes out at the Pakistan head coach
“If you look at the number of international coaches nowadays and those in the past, you will notice majority of them were failures or average in their playing days. There are exceptions but majority are failures as players,” Shoaib was quoted as saying in GTV News.
“I think it is wrong to assume that if you have a coaching degree at any level you can be a good and successful coach. If a person has played top-level cricket successfully he has a far better chance at succeeding at management and coaching,” he remarked
“He is far more likely to succeed in helping groom and guide a player or help a player who is facing motivational or technical problems. A degree in coaching is helpful but only if you have played cricket at the highest level.”
“How did players like Hanif Muhammad, Sunil Gavaskar or Javed Miandad pile up records without coaches? They didn’t have coaches but they had mentors and that is what is needed in cricket,” Shoaib, also the son of legendary Pakistan cricketer Hanif Mohammad was quoted as saying.
Pakistan are next scheduled to play a solitary T20I and a five-match ODI series from May 5 to May 19 prior to the start of the World Cup. In the mega event, Pakistan will start their campaign against the Windies on Friday, May 31 at the Trent Bridge in Nottingham.
