January 2018 was mostly regarding the controversy, surrounding KL Rahul and Hardik Pandya, both of whom got involved in a controversy after attending the Koffee With Karan show. During the show, the youngsters made some ‘sexist’ comments following which they were slapped with suspensions by the Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA).

However, the bans were lifted and the duo resumed their cricketing assignments. In the meantime, the SC appointed Justice DK Jain, a former apex court judge, as the first ombudsman for the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The details of his start date are yet to be announced.

Once he starts, the former chairman of the National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission will have a massive task of passing a verdict on the Rahul-Pandya case.

“We are happy that by consent of the parties and the suggestions, the name of retired Justice DK Jain has been agreed to be appointed as the ombudsman in the BCCI,” a bench, comprising of Justices SA Bobde and Abhay Manohar, was quoted as saying in India Today.

The final verdict is expected to come very soon. The SC also cautioned Vinod Rai, the CoA chief and his colleague Diana Edulji not to say undesired things in the public over various issues.

Pandya and Rahul’s endeavours

Pandya and Rahul were sent back midway from the Australia tour and Vijay Shankar along with Shubman Gill was called upon as their replacements. However, after their ban was revoked, Pandya was called up for the five-match ODI series against New Zealand where he churned out some impressive performances, both with the leather and the willow.

On the contrary, the 26-year-old Rahul played the unofficial ODI and Test series against England Lions. He played some decent knocks in the red-ball fixtures and staked his claim back into the national team for the limited-overs series against Australia, which starts on Sunday, February 24.
