Former White Ferns all-rounder Lucy Doolan quits all forms of cricket

Lucy Doolan, the former New Zealand Women’s all-round cricketer, announced her retirement from all forms of cricket yesterday on March 15. Her international career spanned approximately five years from March 2008 to February 2013. She made her debut in an ODI against England Women in Lincoln on March 2, 2008, and her last international appearance was against the same opposition in Mumbai.

The 31-year-old was one of the White Ferns’ most prolific all-rounders. In 40 ODIs, the Wellington-born scored 674 runs at an average of 21.74 with one half-century and also picked up 32 wickets with best figures of 3/7 against Ireland Women. In 33 T20 Internationals, Doolan notched 194 runs with a top score of 41 and racked up 28 wickets with best numbers of 3/16 against Windies Women.

Talking about her retirement, Lucy mentioned that her body isn’t in great shape and she didn’t have long term plans of playing the sport after the comeback. “The body doesn’t quite bounce back like it used to. And I think the plan was always to come back and play a couple more years after a few years off and then call it a day,” Doolan was quoted as saying in International Cricket Council’s (ICC) official website.

Doolan, who represented New Zealand in the 2008/19, 2012/13 World Cup as well as 2009, 2010 and 2012/13 Women’s T20 World Cup, was also a fulcrum of the Wellington Blaze team. After making her debut as a teenager back in 2004, Lucy amassed 3510 runs and got 172 wickets for them. She was also a part of three titles for the Blaze in the T20 format. Quite expectantly, Doolan expressed gratitude to her team.

“The support that I’ve had from Cricket Wellington as part of the Blaze is amazing. They’ve probably spearheaded the support throughout the country in terms of backing women’s cricket, and I’ve seen that right from when I started playing cricket for Wellington as an 18-year-old,” she added.
