Former Zimbabwean Tatenda Taibu to make a comeback on the cricket field
He retired from international cricket in 2012.
Zimbabwean cricket hasn’t produced a whole lot of talented cricketers in their history, but a few of them has gone on to make a name for themselves at the highest level, one of them was Tatenda Taibu. He donned the national colours for the first time against West Indies at Harare Sports Club in 2001 and carved a reputation as one of their most skilled batsmen in all forms of cricket.
Thereafter, the Harare-born cricketer proudly represented his country in 28 Tests, 150 ODIs and 17 T20Is in which he racked up 1546, 3393 and 259 runs respectively. He was also safe as houses as the wicketkeeper and hardly let opportunities go. However, in July 2012, he decided to bid adieu to the illustrious sport at the age of 29 and mentioned that he would want to concentrate on working for the church.
He will be more than sufficient for our needs
However, he is set to make a comeback on the cricket pitch as he would turn out for an unnamed team in Sri Lanka’s domestic cricket ahead of the upcoming first-class season. Highway publicist Nick Gordon remarked that the experienced campaigner approached the club after they had put out an advertisement for an overseas player in the lineup.
“It’s not every day that a club like Hightown St Mary’s signs a player like Tatenda. I had to do a double take, it was so unusual. We put out an advert for young players but he said ‘I’m not a young player, I’m a retired Test cricketer,’” Gordon was quoted as saying while speaking to BBC Radio Merseyside.
“This guy has played at an incredibly high standard of cricket and we are happy to take the risk. Even if he hasn’t picked up a bat since 2012, he will be more than sufficient for our needs this summer,” he added.
