From 2007 WT20 win to finishing off 2011 WC final: MS Dhoni opens up about his memorable moments in cricket

Former Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni is undoubtedly one of the greatest captains to have ever led a team in white-ball cricket. From leading a young group of men to the inaugural World Twenty20 triumphs in 2007 to realizing India’s dream of winning fifty-over World Cup after 28 years in 2011 to completing the treble of ICC trophied when he led an unfancied group of players to Champions Trophy heist in the summer of 2013, the former Indian skipper has done it all.

Dhoni is the only captain to win each of the three ICC trophies- ICC WT20, 50-over World Cup and Champions Trophy. The mercurial Indian wicketkeeper-batsman is currently on a sabbatical from international cricket since the national sides’ semi-final exit from the 2019 World Cup.

Since then, debates have been rife about Dhoni’s future. But that hasn’t stopped MS Dhoni from engaging on public platforms. Dhoni recently shared some of his memorable experiences during his playing days in a Youtube video published by MyGoodTimes.

One of the two moments that Dhoni went on to share was the reception that he and his side received after landing in Mumbai following their 2007 World Twenty20 win.

“There are few instances in life. I won’t say it was the World Cup. It was related to the World Cup. One was when after the 2007 T20 world cup when we came back, and we were on marine drive. From the airport till Wankhede Stadium, we were supposed to come on a double-decker open bus.

And, right in the middle, the bus is standing, and you could see loads of people on either side of the road, out of their car, there was no one on the driving seat; everybody was out with their mobile phones and they had a big smile on their face. You don’t even know how many people would have missed their flight but the kind of smile they had on their face at that point on time and Marine Drive, you can see the full road and it was filled with people” Dhoni said.

The 2011 World Cup final moment that gave MS Dhoni goosebumps

Apart from that great reception in 2007, the other moment that remains entrenched in the former Indian captain’s memory is the closing stages of the 2011 World Cup final when the entire crowd started singing National song Vande Matram, a moment- if given a chance again- he would like to re-live in the future.

“The second was during the 2011 World Cup final. It was only 10-15 runs needed and the crowd started chanting Vande Matram. And, I believe that was something! I don’t get goosebumps but that moment, I don’t think I would ever be able to get into a similar atmosphere,” said Dhoni.

There was something very beautiful about it and when they started to chant let’s say it was moving from one side of the stadium to the other. Again, it was a moment that I would never forget in life. If I ever get a chance to relive it, definitely I would love to but that’s not really in my control.” he added.
