The game of cricket has witnessed the stoppages in play due to unique reasons. Recently, during the Test match between India and Sri Lanka in Delhi, the players of the visitors had fielded with a mask on their face and also had gone off the field stating that the pollution in the city was causing trouble to them. Similarly, in the ongoing County Championship, the game between Yorkshire and Surrey was stopped frequently as the sea fret descended in Scarborough on Tuesday.
It was in the third session when the play was interrupted as many as 9 times totalling 25 minutes of stoppage time before the on-field umpires Peter Hartley and Paul Pollard took the players off the field. Everyone was perplexed by the sudden change in conditions as the day had begun with the perfect conditions to bat. The sea fret is nothing but the mist coming in off the sea which no one saw coming.
The Indian recruit of Yorkshire, Cheteshwar Pujara, also admitted that it was a completely new experience for him. “It was a new thing for me. I have never experienced sea fret, but I have fog in Northern India, places like Delhi and Dharamsala. When we start at 9.30am in the winter, it’s similar light. But fog doesn’t clear as quickly and come back again as it did tonight,” he was quoted as saying by the official website of his County club.
State of the game
As far as the state of the game is concerned, Yorkshire is having an upper hand on Surrey as the latter side ended the day on 219/7 in reply to 342. The likes of Ben Coad, Steven Patterson and Tim Bresnan were the wicket-takers for Yorkshire as they are set to take a decisive lead in the game.
On the other hand, Surrey would be keen to fight it out on the third day and would be looking to add as many runs as possible. Ollie Pope and Morne Morkel are in the middle for them as the duo has already added 22 runs for the eighth wicket with the latter playing aggressively.
