'Gary Kirsten would be the right person' - Nick Compton suggests Chris Silverwood's replacement post England's Ashes humiliation
The former England cricketer highlighted Kirsten’s success as a coach and stated that he should get the coaching job.
England has had a disappointing outing in the Ashes. The team’s batting unit has struggled to make a larger impact as Australia dominated the proceedings. After the visitor’s crushing defeat, the former England player Nick Compton has reckoned that a few changes should be made in the management.
The head coach of England Chris Silverwood has been placed under major scrutiny after the side has lost nine of their last 12 Tests. Taking this into account Compton said that though Silverwood is a good man, he has already done the best he can, and now certain tweaks need to be made.
He suggested that South Africa’s Gary Kirsten is the right man to be appointed as England’s head coach. The former England cricketer highlighted Kirsten’s success as a coach and stated that he should get the coaching job.
“I would make a change now. I think Silverwood is a good man and did the best he can. Kirsten would be the right person. He understands top-level batting, he’s been there in a consistent fashion. Are (managing director) (Ashley) Giles and Silverwood the problem? That’s the big question. I don’t think suddenly you come in and overhaul everything.
It’s about getting the right people into the right places. I don’t think Giles has made the right appointments. I think Kirsten should have got the coaching job, someone who’s more skilled, with experience of taking teams to No 1 in the world, who has won World Cups,” Compton said on Sky Sports Cricket Podcast.
Chris Silverwood has been given an extraordinary amount of power: Mark Butcher
The former England batter Mark Butcher echoed similar sentiments. He stated that the current coach has too much control over things. Opening on the same he said that he would not be surprised if there are changes at the top.
“He has been given an extraordinary amount of power as he’s also the chief selector, which is utter nonsense. It’s completely unsustainable. Whether or not the messaging from him is now starting to fall upon deaf ears in the dressing room is something only they know in there. It wouldn’t surprise me at all if there’s a change at the top,” Butcher said.
