Former India cricketer Gautam Gambhir, who is now an MP from East Delhi, has started his new innings in politics on a positive note. Gambhir called time on his cricketing career in December of 2018 after playing for the country since 2004. He ended on a good note with an innings of 112 against Andhra Pradesh while representing for Delhi in the Ranji Trophy game.

Gambhir defeated Lovely Singh of Congress and Atishi from AAP by a big margin of 695,109 votes. The newly elected MP started off his term on a good note by installing CCTV cameras in order to ensure the safety of women in his constituency, that has been plaguing the capital since last few years. He has also talked about providing fresh air and clean water to the people of East Delhi. But most importantly, he has started by donating his MP salary for a noble cause.

Every penny I make as an MP will be used for my constituents

Gambhir, on Twitter, announced that he will be using his salary as the Member of Parliament to improve the lives of the people from his constituency. It will be used to upgrade the cremation grounds. He mentioned that he is committed to using every penny he earns for the betterment of his people.

Gambhir tweeted, “Politics for me is a way to help the people of my city. My efforts will be to ensure that every penny I make as a MP will be used to better the lives of my constituents. That’s why, I commit my salary to upgrade the cremation grounds with better facilities in East Delhi.”

Earlier, Gautam Gambhir was accused of letting the citizen of East Delhi down in order to give preferential treatment to cricket. Congress leader Radhika Khera had pointed out that instead of putting forward the pleas and needs of the people in parliament, the cricketer-turned-politician was busy giving tips and commentating at the ICC World Cup 2019.

She further said that PM Narendra Modi had played a game with people who voted him and his party into power and the MP who should have been batting for the issues of people in Parliament was scoring sixes while sitting in the commentary box.

Gambhir is known for his sharp words and speaking his mind on social media. A staunch supporter of the Indian armed forces and someone who wear the tricolour on his heart, he was blocked by former J&K CM Mehbooba Mufti on Twitter, after a discussion on Article 370 became more than serious.
