Gautam Gambhir feels Rohit Sharma would be next India captain after Virat Kohli
In both ODIs and T20Is, Rohit has a good track record as the Indian captain.
After ace batsman Rohit Sharma led the Mumbai Indians (MI) to their fourth Indian Premier League (IPL) title on May 12, fans want him to be leading the Indian team as well. The Mumbai batsman led his side to win four titles in seven years and took a lead over Mahendra Singh Dhoni (three) as the most successful skipper. The 32-year-old has also led India with considerable success, winning as important a tournament like Asia Cup last year. In both ODIs and T20Is, Rohit has a good track record as the captain.
Former India opener Gautam Gambhir, an ever-opinionated man, has expressed his viewpoint over the matter. Speaking on the sidelines of a promotional event, the 37-year-old cricketer-turned-politician said: “I think he is probably right up there. He has won four IPL trophies and if you talk about IPL cricket he is the most successful captain. He captained the team in Asia Cup and won it so not only as an option he is probably next to Virat Kohli.”
Gambhir himself had led India in six ODIs in 2010-11 and won all of them. He is one of the four players who have captained India in the 50-overs format but never lost a game. He has in fact criticised Kohli in the recent past over the disappointing track record as the captain of the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Indian Premier League. He said the ace Indian batsman is lucky to have continued as the skipper of the franchise despite its low show.
Rohit has better captaincy record than Kohli in both limited-overs formats
In ODIs, Rohit has led India on 10 occasions whenever Kohli has taken a break and he has won eight matches with a success percentage of 80. The current Indian skipper, on the other hand, has won 49 of 65 matches he has captained India with a win percentage of around 78.
In the T20Is, Rohit has a better track record of winning 12 out of 15 matches while Kohli has led India in 12 out of 22 games. Rohit lost three only Kohli lost nine. Last year, Rohit had also captained India to win a tri-series in Sri Lanka with a second-string side.
