Gautam Gambhir gives his views on Women’s IPL
"It is just about helping and promoting women sport in India" : Gambhir
Not many people in India knew much about the Women’s Cricket Team of the country. But all it took was one tournament to change everything. When women of our country start winning, we forget all the gender bias and start cheering for them. That happened during the Rio Olympics too.
And we are seeing that happen in the ongoing Women’s World Cup where India have reached the finals where they will play hosts England at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground on July 23, Sunday. Surprisingly, so much has been the craze for women’s cricket now that the stadium has been reportedly sold out all the tickets while there are many more wanting for the same.
That the India Eves have made it to the finals, they are finally getting the recognition which was long due. Several men cricketers too are also discussing the tournament on Twitter. From Kapil Dev to Virender Sehwag and Sourav Ganguly, everyone is in awe of Harmanpreet Kaur’s heroics from the semi-final against Australia in which the all-rounder smashed an unbelievable unbeaten 171.
Gambhir’s views on Women’s IPL
The performances of the team have even prompted 2011 World Cup hero Gautam Gambhir to say that if the women win the finals, this victory will be considered bigger than the victory from 2011.
And now that there is going to be an IPL-like tournament for the women, Gautam Gambhir was asked his views on that too. This is what he had to say to Indian Express when asked if franchises will show interest in the league.
I’m sure they would (be interested). There’s nothing wrong with it. I feel that the sponsorship will remain the same. Sponsor who would sponsor the male team would happily sponsor the female team as well. It is just about helping and promoting women sport in India. You can have the same venue and maybe play the women’s matches before men’s matches so crowd comes in to see. That is going to be a great motivation for them. The financial security that it would provide would be great for their future and career.”
