Wasim Jaffer has been an indefatigable ranger in the domestic circuit. He is currently the highest run-scorer in Ranji Trophy cricket. The 39-year old featured for Mumbai in the major part of his career and was a prolific run-scorer for them. However, in the 2015-16 season, he decided to move to Vidarbha and has played three seasons for them.

To the Mumbaikar’s delight, his newly adopted team emerged victorious in the final against Delhi and clinched the Ranji Trophy title for the maiden time. Jaffer scorched four boundaries during Vidarbha’s run-chase and also hit the winning runs for them. During his debut season, Jaffer missed a chunk of the tournament due to injury.

Nevertheless, Vidarbha paid him as per the contract. However, in the limited-overs format, Vidarbha didn’t use his services, however, still paid Jaffer his dues. The veteran cricketer thus decided to return the favour by playing the Ranji season for free.

Gautam Gambhir lauds Jaffer

The gesture impressed Gautam Gambhir and he took to the social media platform, Twitter to hail Jaffer’s stature as a human being, calling him a role model. “Proud of u Wasim Jaffer on keeping money on the back foot. In times when greed, sly and ‘bottom line’ are being identified wid Indian cricketers,u have proven to be a shinning light, a real role model. Wish @bcci makes a mention of this @BCCIdomestic” he wrote.

However, he received his share from the INR 5 crores prize money which Vidarbha received after the historic win.

Wasim Jaffer played 31 Tests for India in which he scored 1944 runs at an average of 34.10. Meanwhile, he racked up 11 half centuries and five centuries for the Men in Blue. His top score of 212 came against the Windies during India’s tour of the Caribbean nation in 2006.

However, owing to a string of low scores and emergence of youngsters, Jaffer lost his place in the side. The right-handed batsman played his final Test against South Africa in Kanpur during the African nation’s tour of India in 2008.
