Gautam Gambhir joins Organ Donation Awareness Programme

Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir might not be contributing much on the cricket field, but his contributions and support off the field cannot be denied. The left-hand batsman has a wonderful habit to surprise everybody with his love for the country and its people.

He has often come up with different ideas to show his support to the nation. Recently, Gautam Gambhir has joined hands for a new noble cause to spread awareness among people to pledge to donate organs, at the Indraprastha Apollo Hospital.

Earlier, Gambhir has been part of various programmes for the betterment of the society and the nation. In April, Gambhir had pledged to bear the full expenses of the children of 25 CRPF personnel killed in an attack by Maoists in Chhattisgarh’s south Sukma area.

Earlier in July, he had also started a Community Kitchen in New Delhi, to serve the poor with food that would be free of cost. The cricketer feels extremely humble to be part of the noble campaign to save lives of thousands of people.

“I am extremely humbled to be a part of this drive. Organ donation is an egalitarian and a moral act,” Gambhir was quoted as saying by News 18, who is also an ambassador for “Gift a Life.”

Initiative can save lives

The 35-year old feels that the Organ Donation campaign can save the lives of many people, who die majorly due to non-functioning of the organs. “Thousands die every year for want of organs and I feel that this initiative will bridge the gap by spreading awareness in the society,” said Gambhir. The cricketer loves to serve the people of his nation, which he wants to express through this campaign.

Lack of Awareness a major reason

“One of the major reasons is lack of awareness about organ donation in India at large where majority of the population is still shackled with myths and religious beliefs, hence there is an urgent need to address this issue and create sound awareness,” said Anupam Sibal, Group Medical Director and Senior Paediatric Gastroenterologist at Apollo Hospitals Group.

Gautam Gambhir played an important role for the Indian Team in the 2 historical World Cup victories in 2007 and 2011. He has also won the IPL Trophy twice for his franchise Kolkata Knight Riders. He now wishes to serve the people much like the same he serves the country on the field with passion and a golden heart.
