Gautam Gambhir likely to replace injured KL Rahul

Indian opener KL Rahul’s injury might open the doors for the veteran left-handed batsman Gautam Gambhir. One of the latest batting sensations of the Indian batting line-up, Rahul suffered from a right hamstring during India’s second innings of the first Test match at Kanpur.

India went on to win the first Test match by a huge margin of 197 runs, which was India’s historic 500th Test match. Hosts have gone 1-0 up in the three-match series with the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata to host the second Test match, which is India’s 250th Test match at home.

Indian management is working hard on KL Rahul’s fitness, while the Indian coach Anil Kumble, according to the reports from India Today, has asked to call back the in-form Gautam Gambhir as a backup opener for the second Test in Kolkata, starting September 30.

Gambhir, who played his last Test match against England at the Oval in August 2014 is subjected to undergo a fitness test at the National Cricket Association (NCA) in Bengaluru on September 27.

BCCI described Rahul’s injury as “slight niggle in hamstring”, but if the reports are to be believed, it is expected to be a bit more serious one.

Gambhir on song with the bat:

Considering Gambhir’s recent form, he was rewarded with the captaincy of the India Blue team for this season’s Duleep Trophy tournament.

He opened the innings for India Blue and scored a 90 and 59 in two innings against the India Green and followed it up with a 77 in the washed out game against India Red. In the final against India Red, he had scores of 94 and 36, which helped his side to clinch the title.
