Gautam Gambhir reacts on Yuvraj Singh's wish of coming out of retirement

Yuvraj Singh had pleasantly surprised the cricket fraternity when he had expressed his wish of coming out of his retirement to play domestic cricket for Punjab. The previous year on June 10, the swashbuckling all-rounder had announced his retirement from all the formats of the game including domestic cricket and Indian Premier League (IPL) after having almost 20 years of experience in international cricket.

Last month, Puneet Bali, the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) secretary had urged Yuvraj to come out of retirement and play for the state in the upcoming domestic season. Giving thought to Bali’s words, the all-rounder decided to adhere to PCA’s request and help the budding cricketers of his home state.

Coming out of retirement will also mean that the left-handed batsman would no longer be able to participate in the overseas leagues. He had participated in the Global T20 Canada league and Abu Dhabi T10 league last year.

“I was done with domestic cricket, though I did want to continue to play in other domestic franchise-based leagues worldwide if I got permission from the BCCI. But I also couldn’t ignore Mr Bali’s request. I gave it a lot of thought, for nearly three or four weeks, and it was almost as if I didn’t even have to make a conscious decision in the end. As things stand now, I will be playing only T20s if I get the nod. But who knows, let’s see,” Yuvraj had told Cricbuzz.

On Friday, former Indian opening batsman Gautam Gambhir opined on Yuvraj’s decision of coming out of retirement saying that this is his personal decision and there’s no harm if he wants to play for Punjab. Gambhir further stated that he along with all the other cricket fans would love to see Yuvi play again.

“It’s his personal decision and each and everyone loves seeing Yuvi play. If he wants to play for Punjab so why not? You can’t force a cricketer to start or to end and if he wants to come back from retirement and play with motivation, he is most welcome,” Gambhir said as quoted by Hindustan Times.

The two share a good bond and have played together for the Indian cricket team for many years. Both Gambhir and Yuvraj are hailed as the heroes of India’s victory in the 2007 T20 World Cup and 2011 ODI World Cup.
