Former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir, on Thursday, July 30, announced his plans to support the daughters of the sex workers at the Garstin Bastion Road in New Delhi. The GB Road is a red-light area, running from Ajmeri Gate to Lahori Gate in the Capital city of India.

On Friday, July 31, the initiative, named ‘PAANKH’, where 25 minor daughters will be taken care of, will be launched. Lending his helping hand, the 38-year-old Gambhir understood the importance of dreams for every other individual in the country.

We aim to empower adolescent girls: Gautam Gambhir

“Everybody in the society has the right to live a decent life and I want to ensure more opportunities for these children so that they could live their dreams. I will take care of their living, education and their health,” Gambhir was quoted as saying in a statement, reported by Outlook.

Gambhir, who retired from international cricket back in December 2018, put forth how he’s planning to help them out through PAANKH. “We will sponsor their school fees, uniforms, food, medical help, including counselling, so that they can achieve their dreams,” he stated.

Gambhir mentioned that in the next session, more children would be included and stated that the target is to help at least 25 people. “We aim to empower adolescent girls (5-18 years) by giving them regular counselling so that they complete their education,” Gambhir added.

Gambhir, after his retirement, has been involved in various welfare works through the Gautam Gambhir Foundation, taking care of 200 children. For the time being, being a Member of Parliament (MP) from the East Delhi Constituency, Gambhir has been in the scheme of things.

Even in the COVID-19 pandemic, the Delhi-born Gambhir has been trying his heart and soul. Back in April, the southpaw donated his two years’ salary to the PM-Cares Fund, an initiative by Honourable Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi.

In April, he also donated 1000 Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) kits to Lok Jai Prakash Narayan (LNJP) Hospital. He has also been pretty active on the social media platforms and also engaged in some war of words with former Pakistan cricketer Shahid Afridi.
