Cricket Australia (CA) has decided to appoint the former Australia skipper George Bailey as the leader of the Australia PM’s XI squad which will face South Africa later this month. The Proteas are travelling Down Under to play three ODIs and a solitary T20 International and this will be their only warm-up game which is scheduled to take place on October 31.

This is not the first time that Bailey, who is currently leading Tasmania in the ongoing domestic One-Day Cup, has been handed over the responsibility to lead the side. He feels privileged to lead a bunch of emerging players who are provided with a great opportunity to press their case for the national side.

“I’ve been fortunate enough to represent the Prime Minister’s XI on a couple of occasions during my career, and now to captain, the team is a real privilege. Over the years, the match has provided an opportunity for some of Australia’s best-emerging players to test their skills against a quality international side, and I’m sure this year will be no different,” he said after his appointment was announced by new Prime Minister Scott Morrison.

Bailey in line for a national comeback?

With George Bailey being considered for the warm-up game, the news of his possible comeback is doing the rounds. Having led Australia at the highest level, Bailey has an experience of 90 ODIs and has amassed 3044 runs at an impeccable average of 40.59 with 22 half-centuries and three scores of over 100. He was also the part of Australia 2015 World Cup winning squad.

However, the 36-year-old has disappeared since then and last played donned the yellow jersey in December 2016. He recently struck form in the ongoing limited-overs tournament and with experience might earn a shock recall for the upcoming ODI assignments of the country. As of now though, the cricketer will be keen on making the opportunity to lead PM’s XI count.
