In a big blow for India, their skipper Rohit Sharma tested Covid-19 positive and has been kept in isolation. The right-handed batter did not bat during the second innings of the ongoing four-day warm-up match against Leicestershire as well.
To note, team India is slated to play a rescheduled Test match against hosts England, which will start on July 1 in Birmingham. With Rohit in isolation, his chances of playing look bleak. If Rohit does not recover in time, then the team management will have to choose a new skipper to lead the Indian side for the fifth and final Test.
England tour is Rohit Sharma’s first away assignment as skipper
It must be noted that this is Rohit’s first away assignment after being named as Indian captain and he will want to recover quickly and give his 100% with both bat and as a captain. Talking about his numbers in Test cricket, the 35-year-old has played 45 Test matches and scored 3137 runs at an excellent average of 46.13. He has also stroked 14 fifties and eight centuries with 212 being his highest.
At present, India is taking on Leicestershire in a warm-up match and the rescheduled Test match is slated to be played between July 1 and July 5. After that, the focus will be shifted towards the three-match T20I series taking place from July 7 (Thursday) and then the same number of ODIs starting from July 12 (Tuesday).
Meanwhile, another Indian team will take on Ireland in the first of a two-match T20I series starting on June 26 (Sunday) at The Village, Malahide, Dublin. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced a strong-looking Indian team for the tour with star all-rounder Hardik Pandya named captain and experienced pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar has been named vice-captain.
Meanwhile, here are some Twitter reactions:
