Billy Root, the 26-year-old all-rounder, has been drafted in by Glamorgan for two years in English county cricket. The cricketer had one year left in his contract for Nottinghamshire, but he didn’t get adequate opportunities in 2018. The Notts have signed Joe Clarke, Ben Slater, and Ben Duckett and the Yorkshire-born player wouldn’t have got many chances even in the next summer.

Hence the decision was taken to release the cricketer and let him join the Welsh county. The left-handed batsman has notched over 1100 runs for Nottinghamshire including quite a few centuries and fifties. Mick Newell, the director of Nottinghamshire cricket, wished Billy for a successful career ahead and hailed him as someone who can efficiently play all the three formats.

I’ve had a brilliant few years with Nottinghamshire

“We’re sad to see Billy go but understand that he wants more regular playing opportunities, something which has been hard to come by over the past year. He has the ability to play in all three formats, as he has shown during his time with us and I am sure he will relish his new challenge with Glamorgan,” Newell was quoted as saying in Nottinghamshire’s official website.

Talking about his upcoming endeavour, Billy sounded excited and mentioned: “I’ve had a brilliant few years with Nottinghamshire and made some great memories here – and I’d like to thank them for giving me my first opportunity in professional cricket. I feel the time is right to embark on a new challenge and I’m excited to see what the future holds at Glamorgan.”

Billy is the younger brother of Joe Root, England’s Test captain and one of the most efficient players doing the rounds in world cricket. Billy is yet to don the national colours but has played 14 first-class, 16 List A, 23 T20s. His most significant knock of 133 came against Sussex in the 2017 season. The knock helped Nottinghamshire from Division Two of the County Championship.
